Descriptive Essays

Descriptive essays are also called “painting a picture” type of essays. With your writing you are basically describing in detail a theme, discussing motifs of a painting, a photograph or describing/narrating a landscape, a special environment, etc. In order to write a descriptive essay, you need to use special words and phrases that are full of “color” and “sensation”. A descriptive essay that is done right, will trigger special emotions in the reader, so you are basically speaking to the heart of the reader with such an essay.

Narrative Essay

The narrative essays are also called “telling a story” essays. Typically, these essays talk about a personal experience, a happy, sad or interesting life experience. A narrative essay allows the writer to open up and talk freely about his/her life and transmit personal emotions through writing. A narrative essay is written in first person, and in order to have a real impact the story needs to be related in a very engaging manner to the reader. The conclusion of the narrative essay is the most important, as here you are allowed to highlight a personal statement, or speak freely about your opinion/feeling regarding the story.

Persuasive Essays

Persuasive essays are about trying to convince the reader that you are right about a certain matter discussed in the essay. For example you can write an essay about “Racism” and then conclude that in this world there should be no racism present because history shows racism has caused many wars and claimed many innocent lives across the world. This is just an example of course, but you can write on any topic that you feel comfortable about.

Expository Essays

These types of essays are about an “exposition of facts” and noting more. You present the reader with certain facts and statistics and allow the reader to draw the conclusion himself. You only need to document very well the entire essay and ensure that all facts and statistics are presented in an accurate form. Expository essays are rather informative than persuasive or emotional. There are comparison and contrast expository essays available, so you should choose the type of writing that you want.

Argumentative Essays

An argumentative essay will have the writer choose one or other side of a matter and stick by it through a presentation of pro and against themes, motifs, arguments. Argumentative essays require that you are a little bit controversial in your writing style and be extremely confident when presenting the facts. These types of essays allow a great freedom in interpretation and you can also include personal points of view across the essay.
